Sin City - Vegas - Here I Is...

Sin City"... a term referred by the band AC/DC... as sung by the late Bon Scot... I'm goin' down.... to Sin City... I'm gonna win.. in Sin City... WIN I DID...
Well my friends. The day has come where I myself will be in the same room as Van Halen. I'm seeing Van Halen in Las Vegas. What a winning pair. Roth in the city of lights.. Eddie smokin' them cigarettes like he 's got another tongue... Well the day has come.

What is "Brown Sound"??? a dude aske me... Here it is Defined.

The brown sound is a legendary electric guitar distortion tone that musicians try to emulate using various effects pedals, tube amplifiers and modeling amplifiers. The term was coined by guitarist Eddie Van Halen to describe the sound of Alex Van Halen's snare drum, which he then attempted to emulate with his 100-watt Marshall amplifier running at full volume. Eddie would use a variac (a device that controls voltage levels) and run it at about 90 volts ac to the power input of the Marshall amp (normally the amp would have 120 volts input in the US; although the older Marshalls like Eddie's were designed in Europe with a 110 volt input rating)this allowed Eddie to lower the voltage input to his Marshall while allowing him to turn the amplifier's volume knob up all the way, this saturated the output tubes, without distorting the preamp tubes, and lowered the stress on the amplifier. Eddie would also use a dummy load on the amp output instead of going right to the speakers, then he would add his effects pedals (Eddie found the effects performed better this way) and then run the effects into a power amp usually an H&H V800 MOS-FET, then to speakers. He would set his Marshall Amp output resistance at 8 ohms and the dummy load at 20 ohms lowering the stress on the Marshall amp (the Marshall amp basically became one powerful preamp). This all helped to create his brown sound in conjunction with the single PAF pick-up and a high resistance volume pot he installed, without a tone control. Of course this was mainly his recording set-up; Eddies live setup was a little different. More than the appropriate number of user-submitted product reviews at the well known musician review websites claim that product X can replicate the Brown Sound perfectly.

Sources of the brown sound are frequently speculated upon, from the pickup Van Halen used on his "frankenstrat" guitar, possible modifications to the amplifier for more preamp gain, additional distortion from the phase 90 pedal, or simply studio trickery. However; Eddie admitted years later that the amp modification story was made up by him to increase his buddies repair business. No real modifications were done to his Marshall amp except once in a while Eddie would use a different rated output tube(s) that would saturate faster. Eddie applied the variac, dummy load, and power amp, along with his modifications to the guitar, and a few effects to get his Brown Sound. It should be noted that older Marshall Amps had a distinct sound to begin with and most guitarist used a lot of treble in the sound where Eddie did not.

Who is the real Van Halen????

I love Van Halen! But I keep asking my self why is this tour taking place. Who is the real Van en??? Why David Lee Roth, Wolf Gang but not Sammy or Mike Anthony???? Taking a musician approach is this all about money or was Lee Roth the best prodigy to best channel Van Halen's artistic work out????

Whats wrong with Wolfie ???

Ever since Wolfgang was born I'm sure Eddie has always dreamed of seeing him up there on stage performing by his side... Well folks... that dream is now realty. You can see he's fillin' the role and shoes of Mike Anthony. Not too bad of a replacement. & yes at first... I was like most Van Halen fans disappointed Mike wasn't going on this tour joining Van Halen, but I'm just goin' with it to see what can develop.... So far, I'm seeing that it ain't that bad of a deal.

Now, that Wolf is pretty good up there let's see what kind of new music they can write together... With the young age & thought of Wolfie & the genius of Eddie... Roth doin' his Blusey riffs and a few WHaaa AAAhhhs now and then... The heavy backbone beat of Alex I think their new music will be pretty damm interesting...

In retrospect, Endless day & night sessions preparing during his Eddie's Rehab period. Wolf has gotten some pretty good instruction.. Just as Eddie did with early piano lessons and jam session with his dad.

The Van Halen Tour.. Devinely on track.....

The tour so far looks like it's meeting all expectations... A big plus is that David Lee Roth is back (22 years gone) and Eddie is flowing on that guitar neck like he hasn't missed step.. Not surprising.. He's simply awesome... & Yes Jim one of my loyal bloggers said.. It would be great to have Mike Anthony back but, HEY ! Wolfie is holding his own space. After reviewing some of the footage around the U Tube; I have tickets in mind for the Vegas show. Just have to go visit with some old college buds in Desert Town... We'll pick up some leg fer sure... Anyway. Can't wait to see them "Live" for myself... It will be good..

David in Charlotte reports on the first night of The Van Halen Tour 2007 (Setlist)

Just got home from the awesome 2 hour concert; the 50 year old boys rock nicely with Eddie's boy at bass. Exact lay out of the 25 songs list are below. They did a very fine show. Valerie Bertinelli was sitting right behind the sound guy for a 15 minute stint. Her expression was the same; no smile, just intense focus. They rocked good together. I really liked their layout of songs; going from "Romeo Delight" to "Somebody Get Me a Doctor". One could easily criticize there performance; Dave would or could not sing all lyrics, he'd stop and then would continue on another line, but what do expect from guys who haven't performed in 20+ years. The guys really had fun performing together; you could see it in their behavior. Don't pass it up!! I'll see them in just 75 miles away from Charlotte, in Greensboro. Makes me wonder, why are we so lucky to have 2 shows in N.C. and no show in the rest of the Southeastern U.S. from Dallas to Atlanta to Miami. We are so lucky.

ONE FINAL LIVE REHEARSAL

[From someone at the Van Halen rehearsal Sept 8th] The final rehearsal just happened. There are reasons to believe that this tour is really going to leave some critics in awe, because the band is reborn. It was only a rehearsal, but one could see Edward playing a new (prototype ?!) Wolfgang guitar without binding (or a black one), an archtop body and a slight different headstock, which may indicate that his work with Fender is progressing.

New Recipe = New Van Halen

Being a guitar player, performing musician & one who has been very influenced by the Van Halen style; I think Van Halen's new sound will be surprisingly different "or "reborn" as Eddie & Roth said at the press conference. "This is a new band... this is a revision... This is not the Police" (Police 07' Reunion Tour). If it's missing one of the guys.. In this case: Michael,,, Then, Eddie, Roth, Alex & Wolf will produce a new distinctive sound... Just as Eddie & Sammy and company sounded very different than the original Van Halen.

There's a sucker born every minute (P.T. Barnum)

I don't know about you all, but I think Eddie is a freakin' genius... He knows how to create so much controversy. This latest thing about not inviting Michael Anthony to the 07 Tour. Man... have you seen how the band has sold out all of the shows to date... Step right Up Folks....To the Greatest Show on Earth!!! Rock Soap at it's best.

Eddie's Dreamlike Life...

Eddie Van Halen is living a dream... He's one of the most influential guitarist of our time. His tapping harmonic leadwork is well known and has placed him up there with rock guitarist greats such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix... The VH Group recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now he get's a chance to live out the dream of playing, touring & recording with his son, Wolfgang Van Halen. What else can you ask for in life...

I think they will all be ok... that goes for Mikey to.

I was listening to the radio about how Van Halen won't last through the tour.. Roth will ruin it, or Eddie will walk...etc.. I think they are past all that head trip shit.. of youth and they know they are on maybe a second (If not maybe their last) leg of life.... They will cherish whatever happens on the tour & studio.

I mean... I was really freaked to hear Eddie had cancer. I thought he was a goner. Thank God for modern science/ Medicine... he is back.

& Roth just hasn't had any luck gettin' his own act together...

I think they will really surprise us... I can't wait to hear the new stuff. Roth in the press conference said "This is a Revision..." I really believe it is....

Van Halen Searches Increase 235%

Van Halen Searches Increase 235%According to Hitwise US, searches for the term 'van halen' increased 235% for the week ending 8/18/07 versus the previous week. Van Halen recently announced that the band is reuniting for a tour this fall with original lead singer, David Lee Roth. Now you know.

Michael Anthony Sez...

Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony checked in with fans on his blogspot page on Tuesday (August 21). He writes:First of all, I hope all of you are having a great Summer!! I want to thank everyone for all the support you're shown me during the past months. It's all been pretty crazy, and I just wanted to bring you all up to speed. Alot of you have been asking about the upcoming Van Halen tour and my response to it. It's not that I'm not touring with Van Halen because I'm going out with Sammy, I'm going out with Sammy because I was not invited to do the VH tour.Sammy told me that if I was asked to be part of the VH tour and decided to do it, it would be totally cool, and it would not tarnish our friendship in the least!! Well it's not to be, and life goes on. I'll still be out there with Sam, and I can't wait to do some partying with all of you. One last note from myself to all the Van Halen fans out there who will be attending their shows... Wolfgang is a great kid, so don't judge him too harshly. I'm sure he'll do just fine!!... See you all soon, Mike

Welcome Van Halen Fans... The Ride Back is long overdue...

Van Halen is gearing up to do a 2007 tour and will include, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen... Minus Michael Anthony... Welcome to the 2007 Van Halen Reunion Blog!!!
